Go with the flow baby

“There’s something about action, the constant movement that really gets you out of your head”

Today it snowed cats and dogs. I mean literally. And it never snows in Vancouver. See what normally happens on a snow day such as today is everything shuts down – meaning no one leaves their homes and we all snuggle into our beds and get cozy. In theory, that sounds amazing. It reeks of comfort, familiarity and home. But unfortunately, I don’t function that way. Staying home for a WHOLE day sounds torturous to me – and maybe it doesn’t sound as crazy as I thought as it does. But I have tons of friends (I’m kidding I only have 3 friends), who are self-acclaimed homebodies and can spend days, even weeks at home by themselves. Man, they must be saving a ton of money, amirite or amirite.

But I, fortunately or unfortunately, operate in a different fashion – and sidenote: I’m actually so grateful for the ability to get to know and accept myself for who I am! Instead of fussing over it and trying to change me. Remember what resists, persists. I now know I like to get movement into my day, I like to change my setting, and I like the fresh air.

So despite the avid snow, I braved it out (it wasn’t that bad), and ventured out into the thick blanket of snow that nestled Vancouver’s picturesque features. With my water-resistant boots, a beanie and sports shoes in bag, I was great. I went for a boxing class, and then did some reading at a new cafe that just opened up. And fast forward, I’ve taken a shower, and just folded my laundry. This regime, one that is so so so simple, is one I found so much solace in. There’s something about action, the constant movement that really gets you of your head. It’s physical. Think of it as a portal to a different feeling – a different world. Recognize the peace in the world. It’s funny how when we’re so sucked into social media, or work, or overthinking made-up situations, our heads can feel so clogged with noise, yet when you look up, and listen to life’s sound effects – be it the smushing of car tires against the slushy snow, or soft jazz playing in a cafe – you open your eyes to such a peaceful world. All you needed to do was listen.

After yesterday’s restlessness, I decided to take a different approach today. I did absolutely what I wanted to and listened to my body. I took each moment in and fully delved in it, instead of rushing it. I recognized those restless days come when I’m a) trying to rush life’s natural rhythm, b) hungry, c) preoccupied by something I can’t control. So if I decided, if I’m in a season where my life is going to take its sweet time – who am I to stop it? I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a reason, and for the best. Go with the flow, baby. Every single day. Show up for yourself, use your time and flow with it. Stay in your lane – good things are coming your way. And for anyone facing anxiety right now about feeling behind – please take it one day at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day. You’re not behind. You’re on your own track. Use this time to build your level-headedness muscle. Learn to be okay when your life isn’t mirroring your peers – learn to march to your own beat. That’s how you’ll get closer to your purpose. Follow your curiosity.

“How cool would it be to be able to walk the streets of entirely different world?”

Another shower thought I had was how everyone has their own world. Everyone has their little quirks, routines and people who make it home, embedded into their universe. It’s interesting how we get assimilated into such few people’s worlds – we really only know them from the surface. It’s like they opened the door, gave us a peek, and we moved onto a different door. How cool would it be to be able to walk the streets of entirely different world? Of several people’s worlds? Let them into your world too? What a magical world that would be!! This year, I truly want to walk the streets of a plethora of new people. I want to let them in. I’d be honored to let it.

Tooooooodles (I watched Just Go with it today, so part of today’s piece is inspired with it and also I love the word toodles LOL)
